Lume Shot Of The Month: Rolex GMT Master Bezel Lume

Stefano Mazzariol
Rolex GMT Master Bezel Lume Shot
[Reference 6542]

It is very rare to see an original 1950s Rolex GMT Master [Reference 6542] with a bakelite bezel insert that still has the tritium glowing, but this no-crown guard beauty from the incomparable Stefano Mazzariol is still glowing. Great shot Stefano!!!!

If is fascinating to now that Dwight Eisenhower was the President Of The United States when this watch was made!?! Talk about timeless design!!! Also notice the red date and the 24 hour hand has a small arrow tip.

Rolex Commando

...Rolex Studio Shot Of The Day...

Rolex Commando
[Reference 6429: 34.5mm Diameter]

Lorenzo's Rolex Commando is pictured below, and it is an unusual and very rare watch. Not much is known about the origin of the Rolex Commando model. Apparently they were sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, and there has been other speculation that it was only sold in the U.S. and Canadian market. They are manual wind watches and it appears they were made and sold between 1967 and 1972. A Rolex commando recently sold in 2010 at Christie's Auction house for $25,000.

Bill Cosby Platinum Rolex President...

...Rolex Super Coolness...

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby is one of the biggest Rolex fans on earth and he has a huge collection of Rolex Day-Dates [a.k.a., The Rolex President]. Bill has been wearing Rolex watches for at least 45 years since he acted on the TV show, I Spy. Both Robert Culp and Bill Cosby both wore Pepsi GMTs on I Spy. If you want to learn much more about Bill Cosby and Rolex, you can on Jake's Rolex World.

On the Bill Cosby comedy album cover pictured above from 1965 named Why is there air? it shows Bill Cosby wearing his Rolex GMT 45 years ago. So this means he has been wearing Rolex for at least 45 years. This next shot is from I Spy, and shows Bill sporting his trademark Pepsi GMT Master.

In the next 2 photos below we see Bill Cosby during the Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids years, wearing a Yellow Gold Mocha GMT Master.

In this last image, we see Bill Cosby During the Cosby Show years, wearing a platinum Rolex Day-Date.

...Rolex Super Coolness...

Matt Farah
Debut of The Car Show on SPEED Tonight

Regular RolexMagazine.com readers know I'm a certified car nut. I was checking out video of the Aston Martin Rapide on TheSmokingTire.com last night when I was reminded, the host, Matt Farah, wears a Rolex LV SubMariner.

Matt Farah has been producing automotive web programs for quite a few years with Garage 419 and TheSmokingTire.com. He's now one of the co-hosts (along with Adam Carolla, Dan Neil and John Salley) of The Car Show which premieres tonight on the SPEED network, and it looks Pretty Good!!! Pretty Good!!! It may even be as good as the British version of Top Gear ;-P

Clearly Matt appreciates the finer things. Great cars and GREAT watches!!!

Magrette Moana Pacific Diver Review

Magrette Moana Pacific Diver Review

It is pretty rare I write a review about watches other than Rolex, Patek Philippe or Panerai, and that is because they are my favorite brands.

I also really like some Magrette watches, and today we are going to take a look at the Magrette Moana Pacific Diver. If you are a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World, you may recall in the past I wrote a few other reviews about outstanding Magrette watches.

I really like Magrette because they remind me of the original Panerai watches that were made by Rolex–in particular, their design language is reminiscent of the Panerai, Small Egiziano, which is my favorite vintage Panerai.

The Magrette Moana Pacific Diver combines the design language of the Small Egiziano Panerai made in the mid 1950s, with a spinning diving bezel, which gives it a really cool, old-school, retro look I really like.

Dion, the owner and designer at Magrette decided to give his Diver a twist, by making the markers on the bezel insert yellow, and he also made the markers on the dial in yellow lume, as well as the Magrette, and Moana Pacific designation. You can't really see it that well in my photos, but there is also some red on the dial.

As you can see in the photos, the Magrette Moana Pacific Diver comes with a beautiful custom textured leather strap with red stitching. It also comes with a rubber diving strap which you can see in the last photo in this article.

The Magrette Moana Pacific Diver is made in New Zealand and costs $485, plus $30 for worldwide shipping. This is a great value for a watch that has a 21 jewel (Myota 8215) automatic movement, which keeps superb time, and is very sturdy. The stainless steel Diver is 44mm, and has brushed sides with a polished finish on the face, crown and bezel.

The Magrette Moana Pacific Diver feature a large screw-down crown which is slightly recessed into the case (not shown) and it's water resistance is rated down to 500M/1650Feet, which is definitely very deep. One of the design characteristics I really like, is the watch has a fat case with a flat-back that does not have a bubble-back, so it sits beautifully on your wrist as you can see in the photo above.

In my mind, this low profile look gives the watch a macho look that is also very streamlined and clean. It is also very, very comfortable.

The photo below shows the Magrette Moana Pacific Diver with the rubber strap that is included with the leather strap. This watch is a limited edition and Magrette is only making 500 pieces. You can find out much more and purchase the watch here. I have had this watch for some time now, and have worn it quite a bit. Overall I am very impressed with this watch!!!

Rolex Super Coolness Earnest Borgnine...

...Academy Award for Best Actor Winner...

Rolex Super Coolness

Earnest Borgnine

Earnest Borgnine is one of the most beloved actors in history, and he is pictured below in 1981 with his wife, he is still married to, and he notice he is sporting his Rolex Submariner.

Earnest Borgnine is perhaps best known for his role in McHale's Navy (1962-1966), and before that, in 1955 he won an Academy Award for Best Actor in his leading role in the movie, Marty. Borgnine also starred in Airwolf in the 1980s. Most recently, Earnest Borgnine experienced critical acclaim for his role as Mermaid Man in the cartoon series named SpongeBob SquarePants.

In the photo below we see a cast publicity shot from McHale's Navy, which has a major deja vu effect on me ;-)

Earnest Borgnine is pictured below in 2010, and today, in 2011, he is 94 years old.

Presidential Watch Sunday: LBJ and Maragret Chase Smith...

Presidential Watch Sunday
An Unprecedented Look At The Presidency

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Last Sunday, on Presidential Watch Sunday on Jake's Rolex World, we took at Lyndon Johnson wearing his trademark Rolex President. Nathaniel is a reader of Jake's Rolex World and he sent in this photo from the Senator Maragret Chase Smith Museum, which has never before been published.

It shows President Johnson at a baseball game with Senator Smith, who was the first female Senator to be elected in the United States. Thanks Nathaniel. Just in case you are not familiar with the history of the Rolex President, it is pretty fascinating.

...Comparison Of The Day... 1950s Role Moonphase v. LV Submariner

...Comparison Shot Of The Day...

1950s Rolex Moonphase v. LV Submariner

Last time I was down at Fourtane Jewelers in Carmel, California I had a chance try on a yellow gold Rolex Moonphase [Reference 6062] and I just happened to be wearing my LV Submariner on a JAKEe FATSTRAP.

It is fascinating to note the moonphase was made in the early 1950s–literally a half-century before the Submariner. I hope Rolex has the WISdom to bring back the ultra-timeless, triple-date moonphase–PLEASE!!!!!
