Rolex History Puzzle Piece: Abraham-Louis Perrelet

...Rolex History Puzzle Piece...

Abraham-Louis Perrelet
Inventor Of The Self-Winding Watch
1729-1826

This is an absolutely fascinating vintage Rolex ad, which I believe is from the 1950s. It pays homage to Abraham-Loius Perrelet and discusses how Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex was inspired to perfect Abraham-Louis Perrelet's automatic movement.

This Rolex ad says:

"As simple as it was hard to find, the Rolex 'Rotor' the invention that solved the self-winding problem, owes its existence to the inspiration of Mr. Hans Wilsdorf of the Rolex Watch Company, and his brilliant technical Chief-Director M. Emil Borer."

This is a significant historical piece of the Rolex history puzzle, because nobody ever knew who M. Emil Borer was, since his name appeared on the Rolex patent application, but nobody knew who he was.

I just added this Rolex ad to The Complete History Of Rolex. Part 1: The Hans Wilsdorf Years, which is absolutely fascinating if you have not read it!!!

Abraham-Loius Breguet
1747-1823

It is fascinating to note that Abraham-Louis Perrelet sold several of his watches to a younger watchmaker who happened to have the same first and middle name, Abraham-Loius Breguet.

Breguet, as mentioned in the ad above, attempted to improve upon Perrelet's automatic watches and named his attempted design improvement "Perpetuelles." Perpetual is a French world for automatic. Breguet's "Perpetuelles" were never reliable and he stopped making them in 1800.

Abraham-Loius Breguet was a watchmaker apprentice in Versailles, and during the French Revolution (1789-1792) he went into exile in Geneva, Switzerland, and when he returned to France he became the principal watchmaker of the French Empire. Breguet was a profuse inventor and in particular his innovative improvement of the balance spring was later incorporated into many watches.

Why I Publish Jake's Rolex World!!!

Why I Publish Jake's Rolex World!!!
An Email from a fan of Jake's Rolex World

Michael is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World and he recently sent in this email that took my breath away:

Jake:

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for the great job you do on your Rolex blog. I am a loyal follower and find something new every time I go on it.

I'm heading over to Afghanistan late next week for an 11 month deployment, and I'll check it over there everyday too!

I won't have my Rolex Sea-Dweller on my wrist (I'm taking my Dad's Timex for all its great functions and I gave my Dad my Sea-Dweller for him to wear everyday) so your cool photos, awesome posts and great pictures will help me pass the time and get my mind back to two things I love: Rolex and California!

In fact, your blog is so great that I've told my local watchmaker about it (Tom Doan of D's Time Service in San Diego) and he likes to post tweets about it! www.twitter.com/dstimeservice

Hope all is well Jake. And keep up the great work!

Very Respectfully,

Mike

Truth be told, the reason I have always worked so hard on Jake's Rolex World is for three reasons:

1. I realize if I did not capture this amazing Rolex history, it is likely it would be lost forever, and in my mind that would be an absolute shame!!!

2. I love it!!! I love the education I get from researching all the stories. I am utterly fascinated with history and often times I feel like Indiana Jones when I go exploring all this rich history.

3. Last but not least, I work so hard because I know my readers also like the history, photos and editorial as much as I like capturing and sharing it.

I have said many times before, if there just one reader of Jake's Rolex World on planet earth that enjoyed it, I would keep publishing it, and I know there are many people who enjoy it.

There are times, when a reader writes in, that take my breath away, and Mike I can't thank you enough. Your email not only made my day, but it made the four years I have dedicated to tirelessly working on making this amazing online Rolex archive absolutely worthwhile. Thank you!!!!!!

Jake

Dr. Miguel Noyola lives in Mexico and he is a fan of Jake's Rolex World. Recently he took this amazing photo of his Rolex Submariner dial and sent it in to share with you. Click on it for better detail.

Update: Gogi asked in the comments section for this post:

"Why is there no 'ROLEX' inscription on the other edge? Are there Submariners with and without?"

The answer is yes. Around 2005 Rolex started etching "ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX" around the inside rim that houses the dial. This area is know formally as the rehaut area. At the same time Rolex decided to also etch the individual serial number of each watch on the bottom of therehaut area, just above the 6 o'clock marker–prior to that Rolex etched the serial number between the lugs where they were not visible unless you removed the bracelet.

So to specifically answer your question every watch made before Rolex started incorporating this design feature lacks the ROLEX rehaut writing, which is the case with this Submariner case (no pun intended ;-)

Hunter S. Thompson was a complete trip, and in this first photo we see him wearing two Rolex GMT-Master watches on the same wrist at the same time. He is wearing a Coke bezel GMT Master II and a Rootbeer GMT. And I thought Fidel Castro was the only person who wore two Rolex watches on one wrist at the same time!?!?

Back in 2008 my great pal Michael McClure sent in these great shots of Hunter S. Thompson wearing his trademark Rolex GMT II with the Red and Black "Coke" Dial.

Rolex Coolness: Mundy Peale 1953 U.S. Air Force Thunderj

Rolex Coolness: Mundy Peale
1953 U.S. Air Force Thunderjets

I put up this fascinating 1950s Rolex Datejust ad today because I thought it was fascinating how it contrasts with the post below. In particular, it is fascinating how a 36mm Rolex watch that 55 years ago, is now very popular with the ladies, and of course Rolex recently introduced the all-new 41mm version of the same watch, known as the Datejust II. Wrist watches have only grown over the last 100 years, as have human beings in general.

This ad for Republic Aviation is fascinating in that is discusses how Republic provided the U.S. Air Force with 4500 Thunderjets, and in the not so distant future I will be publishing a mind-boggling Rolex history story that shows how Rolex literally helped the U.S. Air Force Test Pilots push the absolute edge of the envelope with their Rolex GMT-Master watches. This is a piece of exciting, game-changing history you won't find in anywhere else, except on Jake's Rolex World–so stay tuned!!!

Note: In 1953, when this Rolex Ad came out, President Eisenhower had just started his first of two terms as the President of the United States, and he was wearing the exact Rolex Datejust featured in this ad.

Tommy is a fan of Jake's Rolex World and he lives in Italy. He wrote in recently and said:

Dear Jake,

I’m an Italian fan of your blog and I visit it every day.

I’m worried about my GV Milgauss. When I bought it, I was very happy, but today I see (maybe I’m wrong) that the Milgauss doesn’t receive any words from you and from the specialized reviews.

Milgauss is dying «again»?

This is my question to your blog…

Bye!

Tommy

Tommy, I have not been avoiding the Milgauss. For a heaping helping of Rolex Milguass Madness you can always find it here and here.

from Minus4Plus6.com

My good pal Sheldon Smith is the editor and publisher of Minus4Plus6.com and he just sent me a note to let me know he just put up a superb story that has all the pages from a 1985 Rolex Talking Points Brochure. A Rolex "Talking Points" brochure is published by Rolex and it is for the sales people to educate them about the Rolex brand. You can see all the pages from this fascinating 1985 Rolex Talking Points, but be pre-warned, you will have a hard time not clicking on each page and reading it carefully.

Sheldon, profoundly points out:

"Although this particular Talking Points brochure was printed in 1985, much of the details revealed are still relevant today."

50th Anniversary LV Rolex Submariner

A few weeks ago we saw the second photo in this post of Danish Crown Prince Frederick and it appeared he was wearing a Rolex LV 50th Anniversary, but it was hard to see the color of the bezel which almost looked black.

Morten Olesen lives in Denmark and he is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World and he just sent in this image from the Danish Newspaper named Ekstra Bladet and the image confirms it is an LV. Morten also said he knew that Prince Frederik received a Two-Tone Rolex Submariner with a black bezel an dial on his 18th birthday, so he might be a Rolay Collector :-)

I WANT A GOOD WATCH!!! 1961 Rolex Submariner Brochure: Reference 5512

...Rolex Zeitgeist...

I WANT A GOOD WATCH!!!
1961 Rolex Submariner Brochure
[Reference 5512]

I was recently interviewed on a podcast about Rolex History and we spoke about how the term "Luxury Watch" is an oxymoron. Luxury is a state of feeling, and and wearing a metal tool watch on your wrist is not luxurious. Up through the end of the Patrick Heiniger era, Rolex was positioned as a "Luxury Watch" but ever since Bruno Meire took over as the CEO, Rolex seems to have changed its course and in the last year, ever since Rolex overhauled Rolex.com, they appear to be headed back to their amazing roots!!!

This 1961 Rolex Submariner Brochure seems to perfectly sum up the essence of Rolex. It was printed a year after the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf passed away, and thus I believe it best reflects his intentions, brand ethos, essence and zeitgeist...Read it and decide for yourself...I think this pretty much sums it all up!!!!

Notice on the page above it still says "Havana" since Rolex was still in Cuba, and also notice on the bottom of the right page below, it reefers to the Rolex Submariner as being "designed for Deep Sea Diving and all Aquatic Activities. What can I say, it's Flipper Friday!!!

...Blast From The Past...

1961 International Harvester Scout

The International Harvester Scout was introduced in 1961 at the first competitor to Jeep. To this day it is considered a classic piece of automotive history. Anybody miss Flipper Friday? Doesn't the mom in the car look like Nancy Reagan?

It's amazing, if you think about it, how much cars have evolved in the last 50 years!!! While the Scout looked cool, it is incredible how unsafe it was. It does not even appear to have seat belts, not to mention zero roll-over protection?

The Secret Of Life Is Enjoying The Passage Of Time

Time Quote Of The Day

"The Secret Of Life Is Enjoying The Passage Of Time."

–James Taylor

Secret O' Life by James Taylor

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time
Any fool can do it
There ain't nothing to it
Nobody knows how we got to
The top of the hill
But since we're on our way down
We might as well enjoy the ride

The secret of love is in opening up your heart
It's okay to feel afraid
But don't let that stand in your way
'cause anyone knows that love is the only road
And since we're only here for a while
Might as well show some style
Give us a smile

Isn't it a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Now the thing about time is that time
Isn't really real
It's just your point of view
How does it feel for you
Einstein said he could never understand it all
Planets spinning through space
The smile upon your face
Welcome to the human race

Some kind of lovely ride
I'll be sliding down
I'll be gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Isn't it a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Now the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time

The Complete History Of The Rolex Yacht-Master

Note: This story is a work in progress and still needs much work. As time permits, I will work on this story, and when it is complete, I will remove this notice.

The Complete History Of

The Rolex Yacht-Master

Rolex very, very rarely introduces all-new models, as a matter of fact, the last Rolex model introduced before the Yacht-Master was the Rolex Daytona which was introduced in 1964. Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master in 1992, so it too them 28 years to come up with an all-new model! Just for frame of reference, it took Rolex another 20 years to come up with another mode, which was the Sky-Dweller, which they introduced in 2012.

In 2012, Rolex also introduced an all-new version of the stainless steel and platinum Yacht-Master, with a cobalt blue sunray dial and it is an instant classic!!!

An Ultra-Rare Rolex Prototype
The 1967-1969 Rolex YACHT-MASTER

My pal and fellow Rolex fanatic from Italy, John Goldberger recently sent in these stunning photos of his Ultra-Rare 39.5mm Rolex Yacht-Master Chronograph Prototype [Reference 6239/6242] the dial of which was made in 1967 and the watch in 1969. How rare you ask? It is one of only two known examples. I know Eric Clapton owned one.

Note: You have to click on this image to check out the detail. It is also a great piece of desktop wallpaper courtesy of John Goldberger.

John is one of the worlds leading vintage Rolex collectors and last year he published his amazing 100 Superlative Rolex Watches which I did a detailed review of, along with a fascinating podcast interview with John which you can see by clicking here.

So what is the origin of the Rolex Yacht-Master Chrongraph? From my study of Rolex design it is crystal clear to me that Rolex experimented like crazy and one could argue that Rolex threw everything they could think of at the wall and waited to see what stuck. The original Rolex Yacht-Master is interesting because it was the second Rolex developed around the Nautical theme–the first being the Rolex Submariner.

Ironically, Rolex developed the Yacht-Master Chronograph before they developed the SEA-DWELLER. I believe Rolex wanted to try to capitalize on the extreme success of the Submariner as a tool watch.

The original Yachtmaster looks like early Rolex Daytona models, but the Daytona models at the time were 36mm, where the Yachtmaster was 39.5mm. Rolex ultimately decided not to bring the Yachtmaster Chronograph to market in the late 1960s, but it remains a very interesting piece of Rolex design history!!!

The Rebirth Of The Rolex Submariner Yacht-Master

In 1992 Rolex introduced an all new Yacht-Master, but what was its design genesis? A friend of mine, many years ago told me the story of how and why Rolex developed the modern Yacthmaster. I can't confirm his story, because I was not there but I will share it with you:

In the late 1980s, Rolex wanted to significantly update and modernize its Rolex Submariner model. The Rolex design team experimented like crazy and came up with what today is the modern Yacht-Master. The challenge was that Rolex loved the new design, but was scared to death to radically transform the Submariner. The Rolex Submariner was at the time and remains to this day, the most iconic watch in the world.

One could argue that for the last half-century, the Submariner has been Rolex's bread & butter.

Rolex loved the design of the new Submariner prototype; where the original had hard right angles, the new one had smoothly radiused edges. The new version had an etched bezel insert that was permanently soldered to the bezel. The new watch had fat hands and maxi markers and was a magnificent work of streamlined art. The challenge was that it looked nothing like the original.

Jocke, the famous Rolex photographer took the side by side photo above of the Rolex LV Submariner with Black Bezel Insert next to his Stainless and Platinum Yacht-Master. If you look at the two watches side by side, you really see how similar they are-so much so, one could argue they are the exact same watch.

Rolex Design Language Evolutionary Steps

Design Note: Rolex design language has always been about evolving and then checking back-in with the past. This design methodology typically results in a timeless product that has strong ties to its past. If you examine the all-new Rolex Submariner Rolex Introduced in 2011, you see how it leap-frogged right over the Yacht-Master, while building on the Yacht-Master design language.

In other words, the new Supercase Submariner (2011 Model) has a ceramic bezel insert with lowered white gold markers, which give it a more sculptured/etched look like the Yacht-Master bezel in reverse. Just in the same way the crown guards grew fatter on the Yacht-Master than on the older Submariner, the new Ceramic Submariner has even fatter, crown guards.

Same thing with the new Ceramic Submarine getting fattened up lugs that give it a SuperCase. Also, add the fat hands, and Maxi-Markers, and the Ceramic Submariner leap-frogs the Yacht-Master by adding the super-innovative glide-lock clasp.

I realize I got a little sidetracked with the Submariner/Yacht-Master discussion, so now let's go back to the Yacht-Master. Rolex ultimately decided to revive their old trademark of Yacht-Master, and the rest, as they say, is history. If you carefully examine the modern Yacht-Master you will find it is almost identical in every way to a Submariner!!! The stainless steel and platinum Yacht-Master below almost looks like an albino version of the Submariner.

Rolex originally introduced the 40mm Yacht-Master in 1992 it was a Reference 16628 in 18kt gold, with a white dial and 3135 movement, which was the same movement used in the Rolex Submariner. The Yacht-Master had a triple-lock crown, and it was water resistant to 100 meters (10 bars) which is 320 Feet. Essentially, the first Yacht-Master was positioned as a Luxury version of the Submariner. The Submariner was for use underwater, and the Yacht-Master was for use topside. If the Submariner was for The Captain/The Skipper, the Yacht-Master was for Thurston Howell III (The Millionaire).

Just for frame of reference, I am sharing these image of  Emeril Lagasse and Brad Pitt sporting full-size 40MM Men's Rolex Yacht-Master models.

In 1994, Rolex introduced a 35MM "Mid-size edition" named the Reference 69628 which was geared toward the Asian market, or for men with smaller wrist sizes. In the photos below we see Charlie Sheet rockin' a three-quarter size Rolex Yacht-Master.

That same year Rolex introduced the women's 29MM version of the Yacht-Master named the Reference 69628.

In the same year Rolex also introduced an 18KT gold 40mm men's version with a blue sunray dial, which I happened to purchase. I took the wrist-shot photo below of my yellow gold Yacht-Master in 2002. I don't own this beauty anymore, but I really enjoyed wearing this striking work of art.

In 1999, at Basel Fair, Rolex introduced the 40 MM stainless steel and platinum version of the Yacht-Master known as the Reference 16622. Rolex refered to this stainless steel and platinum combo as Rolesium

This watch is unique in the sense it has a platinum machined bezel with beautifully raised markers, as well as a dial made out of platinum. I have often criticized this model for lacking contrast and being to monochromatic, or albino, but in certain lighting, conditions the dial really comes to life as you  can see in this photo taken by Vu.

In 2005 Rolex introduced a 40MM Rolesor stainless steel and gold two-tone version of the Yacht-Master known as Reference 16623. Rolex refers to two-tone stainless steel versions of their watches as Rolesor.

Rolex also started making Yacht-Master watches with special mother of pearl dial, as seen below.

...Rolex Instantly Re-invents A Classic...

Stainless Steel & Platinum Yacht-Master

Cobalt Blue Sunray Dial
[40mm: Reference 116622]

Rolex very, very rarely introduces all-new models, but when they originally introduced the Yacht-Master in 1992 it was a Reference 16628 in 18kt gold, with a white dial and 3135 movement, which was the same movement used in the Rolex Submariner.

All New Blue Dial Yacht-Master Photo By Jurgen

At BaselWorld in 1999 Rolex suprised everyone when the introduced the stainless steel and platinum version. Rolex refers to the combination of Stainless Steel and Platinum as Rolesium. This all-new model was the first to bring back the timeless Maxi Markers and fat hands. Since then Rolex has slowly returned all sports models to incorporate Maxi Markers and fat hands-Thank God!!!

The stainless and platinum Yacht-Master dial and bezel were made out of platinum but, the challenge was that the watch had no contrast. It was beautiful but it looked albino and had no pop. That all changed this rear at BaselWorld when Rolex introduced the new 40mm Reference 116622 with a Cobalt Blue Sunray dial, which is just stunning. With this new version Rolex also updated the case design, by giving the Yacht-Master a Supercase, which means, they made the lugs much thicker.
