Introducing the Coolest Car Ever Made: The 2011 Camaro Convertible

Introducing the Coolest Car Ever Made!!!!!!!!
The 2011 Camaro Convertible

Today Chevy showed off the first production photos of the upcoming 2011 Camaro Convertible. In my personal opinion, this is the coolest, best-looking, best-performing car ever made!!!!!!

Almost 30 years ago, when I was early 15, before I was old enough to drive, I fell in love with the stainless Rolex Submariner and the 1969 Chevy Camaro. When I was 16 I bought my first stainless steel Rolex Submariner, and I drove a 1969 Camaro. I was very unimpressed with the way the 1969 handled and that was the last time I ever wanted an American car.

The irony is that when I was in high-school I wanted to be an automotive designer, but I realized American cars were absolute cardboard junk, and I did not want to move to Germany, so I ended up designing clothes and computers.

So essentially, all my adult life, there was NEVER an American car I wanted to own. This struck me as being totally bizarre that I lived in a country that put a man on the Moon, and designs things like the Apple iPhone, but made half-baked cars.

Today, that all changed, and I am very excited to introduce you to the first American car I would be happy to own–The 2011 Camaro Convertible.

The V8 SS version should start around $40,000 and do 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. In order to get this kind of performance out of a Mercedes SL you have to spend $200.000 for an SL AMG, and in my personal opinion, this looks way cooler!!!!!

The Camaro Convertible will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto show in November and go on sale in February 2011. With the advent of the Chevy Camaro Convertible, I can proudly say, the American Muscle car is back with a vengeance!!!!!!! This car is ultra-cool and I can't wait to get one!!!!!!!

Rolex originally developed the Rolex GMT Master in 1955 for Pan American International Airways, and from that point forward, they developed a strong strategic partnership, where Rolex prominently and proudly used Pan Am in their marketing collateral material.

Today, Pan Am and Carlyle's Jewelers in Salinas, California have gone the way of the Dodo bird, but Rolex and the GMT Master are still running strong...

PROJECT X DESIGNS PXD SS1 Limited Edition Customized Original 50th Anniversary Rolex LV Submariner

Rolex Coolness: Daniel Craig
The Royal Hunt Of The Sun

PROJECT X DESIGNS
PXD SS1 Limited Edition
Customized Original 50th Anniversary Rolex LV Submariner

Daniel Craig is best know for being the current James Bond, and he is a big Rolex fan. In the photo below he is wearing his PROJECT X DESIGNS Customized Original 50th Anniversary Rolex LV Submariner.

Many people argue that Daniel Craig is the best James Bond, and that is saying a lot since he is following in the footsteps of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. In any case (no pun intended) you can always learn about all the watches James Bond actors have worn which I covered in my series named "The Complete History Of James Bond Watches: The Definitive Series," which begins with Ian Flemming and Cary Grant, and goes onto Sean Connery, and walks you through step by step, all the way to the present, with Daniel Craig.

Daniel Craig is sporting a copy of The Royal Hunt Of The Sun which is a play written in 1964 by Peter Shaffer that is about the destruction of the Inca empire by the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro.

The PROJECT X DESIGNS customized LV Submariner that Daniel Craig is wearing in no longer available, because they only made 24 of them, and they sold out a while ago, but it is really cool. It has it's crown-guard removed to give it a vintage big-crown look, as well as the cyclops date magnifier removed.

In the future, I have much more exciting news and James Bond history coming up regarding James Bond and Rolex, so stay tuned!!!

Rolex Breguet Ad Yellow Gold Day-Date

1974 Breguet Pocket-Watch Ad
Yellow Gold Day-Date

Pocket-watches from
The Hans Wilsdorf Collection

Nadav is a fan of Jake's Rolex World and he send in this vintage Rolex magazine advertisement with a note saying it is his favorite Rolex ad of all time!!! Thanks for sharingNadav!!!

It is fascinating to note the pocketwatches are from the Hans Wilsdorf collection. Hans Wilsdorf was the founder of Rolex and he was a huge fan of vintage pocketwatches. Speaking of Hans Wilsdorf, I have an amazing story coming up that I hope to publish this holiday season that covers Hans Wilsdorf's amazing career achievements!!!

I was surprised to learn from this ad that the Breguet in this ad that was made in 1825 had "One of the first automatic movements." I always thought Rolex made the first "Automatic" movement when they patented their automatic Perpetual movement in 1931?

I never realized pocket-watches had automatic movements almost 200 years ago!?!?! It just goes to show that indeed, we do learn something new everyday!!!

I must also admit, the more I study this ad, the more I like it, and understand why it is Nadav's favorite. It is really profound, the more you think about it!!!!!

I argue, that in order to truly understand and appreciated Rolex today, we must completely understand all of Rolex history–especially Hans Wilsdorf's achievements, and to best understand Hans Wildorf, we must understand what horological history inspired him...

Rolex history is basically like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. First you begin by separating all the puzzle pieces with straight edges, and you figure out how to put them together, then you start working inward, which is exactly what I have been doing all these years.

I don't know that we will ever have all the pieces, but I am certain we will have most of them in place. I must also mention that as we get closer to the center of the puzzle, I am still amazed at how incredible and rich the history is!!!

Joe Paterno and Bear Bryant
Legendary College Football Coaches

Otto from Japan sent in this first image and said:

"Hi Jake,

Though I've been considering the trade of my Day-Date for a Day-Date II, I am constantly reminded that the 36m version has withstood the test of time. Tomorrow, Alabama plays Penn State, so this old photo of Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno was used for an article on ESPN. It looks like the Bear is wearing his President; and it looks pretty big on that giant of a man!

Otto"

Joe Paterno is also a Rolex fan and has been wearing his trademark Pepsi GMT for decades as seen in the following photos.

Random Coolness Video Of The Day
Dior Homme: Un Rendez Vous
Starring Jude Law–Directed by Guy Ritchie

There seem to be a new genre of cool commercials that are 5 minutes long and are directed by famous directors. This one is from Guy Ritchie, who was married to Madonna (can you imagine?) It is pretty cool so I gave it a "Random Coolness Video Of The Day" but it could just as easily be a "Random Hotness Video Of The Day."

For some reason, I think this video is better and more interesting than any James Bond movie I have ever seen!?!

Ed Viesturs: A Real Rolex Explorer

...A Real Rolex Explorer...

Rolex Coolness: Ed Viesturs
On Top Of The World

Ed Viesturs is one of the most accomplished high-altitude mountain climbers in history. He not only wears a Rolex Explorer, but is also officially sponsored by Rolex. In many ways, Ed Viesturs is the living is the living embodiment of the Rolex Explorer, both literally and figuratively.

Ed is the first American, and 12th person overall to summit all 14 mountains that are taller than 8000 meters, know collectively as the "Eight-Thousanders." He is also the sixth climber to do it without bottled oxygen.

"Getting to the summit is optional, getting down is mandatory." –Ed Viesturs

Ed Viesturs is about as hardcore as high-altitude climbers get and he has summitted Mount Everest a total of six times. Talk about taking your breath away!!! (No pun intended).

If you want to learn more about Mount Everest and Rolex, check out my story of Sir Edmund Hillary and Norgay Tenzing's conquest of Everest story by clicking here.

The following Rolex Ad is shows Ed Viesturs on top of Everest.

We see in the first photo in this story as well as in the photo below, Ed's trademark watch is a Rolex Explorer II with the white dial.

Watch Charlie Rose interview Ed Viesturs:

In the close-up version below (of the photo above) we see Ed Viesturs on top of the world and he is wearing a Rolex Submariner.

Ed Viesturs is pictured below with mountain climbing legend Jim Whittaker. Jim Whittaker was the first American to summit Mount Everest.
