The Rolex President: U.S. President: Lyndon Johnson-1969 Apollo 11 Lift-off

...The Rolex President...
U.S. President: Lyndon Johnson
1969 Apollo 11 Lift-off

I figured since we just took a look at Crosby, Stills and Nash making their debut as a band at Woodstock in August 1969, it would be interesting to examine who else was wearing a Rolex in that same timeframe. The photo below was taken exactly one month prior to Stephen Stills playing Woodstock wearing his trademark Rolex Submariner.

The irony of course is Lyndon Johnson and Crosby, Stills and Nash were not just completely opposite politically, but Johnson was in the twilight of his career, while Crosby, Stills and Nash were just really getting going with theirs, but the one thing they had in common was an appreciation of Rolex. Profound if you think about it!!!

In this first photo we see former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson wearing his trademark yellow gold "Rolex President" Day-Date as he watches Apollo 11 take-off for the Moon from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on July 16, 1969 at 9:32am EDT. Former U.S. Vice President Spiro Agnew is pictured on Johnson's right and Lady Bird is on his left.

Despite the fact President Kennedy set the goal of putting a man safely on the moon and returning him to earth, it was the Johnson administration that really made it happen, so this moment must have been a crowning achievement in President Johnson's career.

Historical Note: The photo above of U.S. President Johnson is a bit ironic because he was no longer President when this photo was taken. At the time Richard Nixon was the President of The United States and he did not attend since he was paranoid the launch might fail. Instead he watched the launch live from the Oval Office.

The Eagle Has Landed

Just in case you are too young to remember, Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon, which is arguably one of mankind's greatest achievements. Captain James Hulme Rolex Out In The Field Of Duty In Afghanistan

Rolex Datejust On A NATO Strap

Captain James Hulme from the United Kingdom's Cavalry sent in this fascinating photo with the following note:

Hi Jake,

I've been a big fan of Jake's Rolex World Magazine for ages.

I'm an Officer in the British army in a unit called the Household Cavalry. I was recently on a fairly eventful and action packed Operational Tour to Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

I took a photo of my Oyster Perpetual Day Date, silver striped face, with a black webbing strap. I thought that it looked quite smart. Anyway, a great watch, I've worn it not-stop for the last five years, and it has seen some hard hits. Assault courses, ambushes, fire-fights.

I also own an 18k yellow gold Submariner–needless to say, I don't wear that one in the army, shame, I think it would make quite an amusing photo.

Keep up the good work with the site.

Best Regards,

Captain James Hulme

Crosby, Stills & Nash: Folk Rock Supergroup 4 Decades of Rolex

Crosby, Stills & Nash
Amazing Folk Rock Supergroup
with Rolex Keeping Their Time

Crosby, Stills & Nash is one of the most popular folk rock supergroups of all time, and as we will soon see, they have been wearing Rolex Submariner watches for four decades. They are pictured below in this first photo in 1969 just before they played Woodstock, and Stephen Stills (center) is wearing his trademark Rolex Submariner which you will see better later in this story.

Crosby, Stills and Nash are best known for their trademark sound which fuses magnificent vocal harmonies with amazing lyrics. All three band members have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and their music literally defended an era.

Judy Blue Eyes
Live at Woodstock 1969
Rolex Submariner

Crosby, Stills and Nash blew everybody's mind when they performed live at Woodstock in 1969, and their version of Judy Blue Eyes is just amazing!!!! As a matter of fact, Woodstock 1969 was the first time they ever performed together as a band.

Notice Stephen Stills sporting his trademark Rolex Submariner while giving this seminal performance at Woodstock in 1969!!!!. This is one of the best songs of all time!!!!

An interesting point is that in Judy Blue Eyes, Crosby, Stills and Nash sing the last chorus in Spanish, and they sing:

Que linda me la traiga Cuba,
La reina de la Mar Caribe.
Cielo sol no tiene sangre alli,
y que triste que no puedo vaya,
Oh va, oh va, va.

Translated from Spanish to English they are singing:

"Oh, what beauty Cuba brings me,
The queen of the Caribbean Sea,
Sunny Sky has no blood over there,
And how sad that I cannot go,
Oh go, oh go, go."

The band members from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young came from 1960s rock bands, The Byrds, The Hollies and Buffalo Springfield. They introduced their first album in 1969 to critical acclaim.

Down By The River
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

On and off over the years, Crosby, Stills and Nash have been joined by Neil Young as seen in the following 1969 video:

BBC Live Performance with Crosby & Nash

This next set of 5 videos was shot live for the BBC in 1970 and it is really something else to see this live unplugged, acoustical performance!!!!

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are best known for their vocal harmonies and their amazing guitar playing. In this live video of Carry On, shot live at Wembley in 1974, these crispy-critters seriously rock out!!!

In the photo below, taken in 1982, we see Graham Nash on the far left with record industry super-producer, Ahmet Ertegn, and Stephen Stills on the far right.

In this next photo we see actress, comedian, and talk-show host, Ellen DeGeneres with David Crosby. Ellen of course is a Rolex fanatic.

In this last image we see Crosby, Stills and Nash today. Their partnership has spanned over 5 decades with David Crosby and Stephen Stills wearing Rolex Submariner watches.

In the recent photos below we see Stephen Stills wearing his trademark Role Submariner 41 years after he wore it during Crosby, Stills and Nash seminal performance when they played Woodstock in 1969!!!!! Just amazing!!!! It is amazing how many famous guitarists wear Rolex Submariner models.

Marlon Brando Rolex GMT Master From Apocalypse Now...

...Profiles In Coolness...

Marlon Brando
The Wild One
The Greatest Actor In History
An Amazing Life with Rolex Keeping His Time
1924-2004

Marlon Brando is considered by many to be the greatest actor that ever lived. In his amazing career he won two Academy Awards. One for Best Actor in the 1954 movie "On The Waterfront" and in 1972, another for Best Actor in "The Godfather."

Not only was Marlon Brando a pioneer of cool, but he was also a lifetime Rolex wristwatch wearer. In this article we will see him wearing three different Rolex watches.

The Fugitive Kind (1960)
All The Crazy Moonphases

John Goldberger, the author of 100 Superlative Rolex Watches pointed out that in the 1960 movie, The Fugitive Kind, starring Marlon Brando and Joanne Woodward, that Marlon Brando mentions his Rolex Moonphase 6062. John also points out that he thinks the watch is a chronograph, but I can't see it well enough to tell. I definitely see the moonphase on the dial of the watch when Marlon hands it to Joanne.

John Goldberger pointed out to me in an email "I think this is the first Rolex advertising in the movies, because I bet the original book or script by Tennessee Williams didn't exist with the words Rolex Chronometer."

Update: In a follow-up email, John mentioned "Tennessee Williams wrote the script for The Fugitive Kind in 1937, at which time Rolex had NEVER made a Moonphase of any kind. This means that in 1960, the screenplay authors added the words Rolex Chronometer as well as the description for the Moonphase. Also the description is too precise for the knowledge of a film-maker, and the supreme irony is that the model was out of production in 1960!!"

The Godfather (1974)
Don Vito Corleone

In this next photo taken in 1975 we see Marlon Brando sporting his Coke GMT Master on an Oyster bracelet.

In the photo below, Marlon Brando is pictured with his secretary, and he is wearing his Rolex GMT Master.

Superman

In 1978 Marlon Brando played Superman's father Jor-El in Superman: The Movie.

Apocalypse Now (1979)
Rolex GMT Master

In this next set of photos we see Marlon Brando wearing his Rolex GMT Master in the movie Apocalypse Now. Apocolypse Now was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and Marlon Brando played Colonel Walter Kurtz. Notice his Rolex GMT Master is missing its bezel.

In this next photo, taken toward the end of Marlon Brando's life we see him wearing a two-tone Rolex GMT Master on a Jubilee Bracelet.
